Thurmond Hasn't Spoken In A While April 25th, 2001
WASHINGTON, DC -- "I wonder what that means," mused Sen. Peter Fitzgerald (R-IL). "In fact, it almost looks like he's been sitting in the same position at his desk the past few days. I guess he's just resting more than he used to."
"Senator Thurmond [R-SC] has led an impressive career." said Senate Major Leader Trent Lott (R-MS). Current President Pro Tempore, Thurmond has indeed run a very energetic public career. He was still in office under President Franklin Roosevelt. During the Kennedy administration he even gave the longest continuous speech in Senate history, more than 24 hours, to filibuster a civil rights measure.
"It's really quite incredible, that he has been in the Senate long enough to have voted against the Equal Rights Amendment. Strom is a true patriot."
